Pros and Cons of the Wedding Unity Sand Ceremony
“Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be.”
The Wedding Sand ceremony usually lasts about 3-4 minutes and just like the candle ceremony, it symbolizes the meaningful joining of two lives. It involves two or more containers of different coloured sand, one representing the life of the bride and the other representing the life of the groom. Both bride and groom hold their respective containers and together, pour the sand into a third container, which they later use as a keepsake. As their pour their respective sands into a single container, it symbolizes their becoming ‘one’. Additional colours of sand can be used by the officiant, children or parents of the bride and groom.
PROS of the Sand Ceremony~ Some churches, temple and halls restrict use of candles so the Sand Ceremony is an acceptable alternative.
~ Excellent way to include children in the vows and wedding ceremony
~ Creates a stunning finished product that can be displayed for years in the hole and serve as a constant reminder of the promises that you have made one another.
~ Can incorporate beach sand from a special location- perfect for a destination wedding
~Creates a lasting memento and reminder of the vows you shared
~100% customizable- whatever your situation, the sand ceremony can be used to reflect it.
(Possible) CONS of the Sand Ceremony~ Some denominations/faiths may not accept this as part of the service. Check with your officiant before purchasing to ensure that it can be integrated especially if you are being married by a Catholic Priest. There is nothing about the Sand Ceremony that contradicts the Catholic Rite of Marriage however some Roman Catholic Priests see this ritual as superfluous as the rite of marriage is built on the concept of unity.
~The layers can shift in transit. This can be prevented with a bit of planning. Select a friend to take responsibility for the finished sand ceremony vase to transport it from the venue to your home. It will need to be kept upright or you will lose the integrity of the layers.
The pouring out of different sands and their successive blending symbolizes the bringing together of two lives as one. The bride and groom each pour a layer to start with before blending the colours together. These base layers illustrate that though they are now one, they retain their own individuality.
SAMPLE SAND CEREMONY WORDING
“Today, this relationship is symbolized through the pouring of these two individual containers of sand one, representing you BRIDE and all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, and the other representing you, GROOM, and all that you were and all that you are, and all that you will ever be. As these two containers of sand are poured into the third container, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be.”
